How to Remove Studs from Tires

How to Remove Studs from TiresIn connection with the crisis, many motorists are looking for ways to save money on the maintenance and maintenance of their cars. Some of them prefer to save on tires. This can be done in different ways, for example, using winter tires in the summer. However, to do this, it is necessary to remove extra thorns from them.

How to do it? There are four ways to remove studs from tires. Let’s consider each of them separately.

How to pull out the spikes on your own in a garage. Two ways

Way 1.

The thorns can be removed independently with a screwdriver. It needs to be threaded into the spike, into its upper part and pulled sharply up. Elements that are firmly installed and not prone to falling out will not immediately be pulled out, you will have to repeat the movement several times.

It is best to carry out this process with thick gloves, but even they will not always save you from the appearance of corns. As a rule, it is very difficult to pull out the spikes in this way, and most often it is possible to dismantle no more than half at a time, as you get very tired.

It also increases the risk of rubber damage or even tire puncture. To make sure that no damage has been done, it is necessary to place the inflated tires in water and check if there are bubbles or not. It will be honest to clarify that the process is very long, tedious, and ineffective.

Way 2.

The second option is much safer and more effective. It will already require pliers and a special tire lubricant. First, you need to lubricate the protector, and then use pliers to pull out each claw. In this case, the tires should be well inflated for convenience. When pulling out, the cleats should be directed upwards in order not to damage the rubber.

If you do not have enough knowledge and skills on how to do the above steps on your own, please take a look at the methods below.

Way 3. Contacting a car repair shop

This is the safest and fastest option. However, it will require financial costs. All tire changers have equipment for installing and removing studs. The insertion is made with a special pistol, the pulling is done by it, but with the opposite effect.

Previously, the master prepares the area where the thorn is installed, namely, expands it. After that, the studding elements will be removed pretty quickly. In this case, everything will be done according to safety measures and the tires will definitely not be damaged.

As a rule, after removing the studs, you need to balance the wheels. At a service station or in tire service, it is convenient that it can be produced here. The only drawback of this method is the need to pay for the service.

Way 4. “Knocking out” thorns during operation

For all the studs to fly out of the tread by themselves, you can use such an unusual method as driving on a dry asphalt surface. After a short operation in such conditions, almost all elements will fall out of their seats.

To improve performance, you can quickly pick up speed and resort to emergency braking. However, in this case, there will be one serious drawback – together with the flying out studs, the tire life significantly decreases, since the tread layer is erased in such conditions.

This method also does not guarantee complete removal of the thorns, some of them will in any case remain in their places. In addition, for them to take off, it is necessary to wind up a considerable mileage, and with this driving style, gasoline consumption significantly increases, which entails material losses.

Conclusion

As it turned out, it is quite possible to get the spikes out of the tire, but this will require either tools, effort, and time, or money and specialized equipment. However, it must be borne in mind that trying to make winter tires summer is possible only as a last resort. They are designed for frost, therefore, when used in warm weather, they begin to melt, which is why their wear occurs much faster.
